In my most recent live stream on YouTube I suggested people use what they have and start SOTA; that includes HT only operations. On this activation I’ll be bringing two HT’s and a few antenna systems to show how just a slight improvement in antenna setups can make a huge difference. I am expecting some RFI due to the many radio towers on this summit, but again, I’ll show you how to work around those issues to have a successful activation.
I’m going to show you how I plan my SOTA activations starting with selecting a suitable summit. I’ll cover the logistics involved and how I determine goals and time lines to help the chasers know where and when I’ll be “on-air”. I’ll discuss weather related factors and of course when to bring Tahyo or leave her at home.
Kevin – W6RIP and I will be flying into Seattle on the evening of August 24th then headed to Mt. Rainier National Park to activate several 8-point peaks.
Six points for this one and time may vary depending on time line with traffic and weather. Track KG6HQD-7 via APRS.fi for actual time lines and APRS will be activated from trail head. Will spend 1.5 hours on summit and will work 40m, 20m, & VHF 146.520 FM.
Will work toward arriving and being setup by 0800 PST. Track me on aprs.fi using KG6HQD while mobile and KG6HQD-7 once on the trail for real time ETA to summit. Will spend 1.5 hours on summit and will work 20m & VHF 146.520 FM. Message me on APRS for band requests with 40-10m SSB limits.
